George W. Andreas, 93 Fryburg Township, died Friday, October 9, 2020 at his home. George’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, October 14, 2020 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield with Fr. Shane Campbell as the celebrant. Interment will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors will be provided by the Belfield American Legion William C. Blair Post #144. The wearing of masks is recommended and please abide by the social distancing guidelines.
George William Andreas was born on May 13, 1927 in Ukraina, N.D., the son of Nick and Katherine (Rychkun) Andreas. He was raised and educated in the Fryburg Township and graduated from Fryburg High School. Following high school, George was drafted into the United States Army for WWII service. While at Ft. Snelling, Minn., the were asking for volunteers to join the Navy, and he accepted. He was sent to Aviation Machinist School in Memphis, Tenn., and volunteered for duty in experimental anti-submarine unit. After his military service he went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad. He rode the train to Moline, Ill. to work at the John Deere Factory; however there were no jobs so he went to work for Northwest Wire and Nail Factory (a steel mill). He returned to Fryburg and drove truck for Rock Island and also to farm and ranch.
George was united in marriage to Rose Marie Walter on November 13, 1956 at St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Belfield.
He went on to get AI training for a special cattle breeding program (organic black angus). He even returned to driving truck briefly. George retired from farming and ranching in 2018.
He was a member of the William C. Blair Post 144 and the ND Cattlemen’s Association. He enjoyed stamp collecting, electronics, and model building.
George is survived by his wife, Rose Marie; children, Ben Andreas, Sturgis, S.D., Carmen Waldo, Belfield, Mary Jane (Jimmy) Anderson, Belfield and Melanie Andreas, Rapid City, S.D.; ten grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Art Meduna.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Olga (Albert) Schumaker, Genevieve Meduna and JoAnn (Ron) Egly; and great-grandson, Max Layton.
