Rose Marie Nodland was born October 9, 1936 in Werner, the daughter of Gonvald and Louise (Nodland) Nodland. She was raised and educated in the Werner area, having attended first grade through eighth grade at Eagle Nest School and graduated from Dunn Center High School. Rose’s family supported her to go to college in Bismarck and they were very proud of her to become a Registered Nurse. She attended Bismarck Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her RN Diploma in 1956.
While attending her nursing education in Bismarck, she met the love of her life, Glenn Nickel, whom was working in Mandan at the time. Rose married Glenn Nickel on December 28, 1957 at Normanna Lutheran Church in Dunn Center. They lived in Bismarck until 1962, when they moved to Dickinson. Rose supported Glenn in his work and career as a salesman. As a nurse, Rose worked in the OR and Recovery Room as an evening supervisor at St. Joseph’s Hospital and at St. Luke’s Nursing Home as a Charge Nurse. She was proud of her nursing degree and inspired other family members to become nurses.
Rose was an active member of the Dickinson community through involvement in Rebekah’s Lodge, Jaycee Women, St. John’s Altar Guild and Circle, Camp Fire Girls Leader and the American Nurses Association. She enjoyed embroidery, working in her flower garden, cake decorating, baking and canning garden goods, but she especially cherished family gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren and seeing her great-grandchildren. Rose’s children fondly recall all the annual family camping trips to national parks, where she packed up their small camper and loaded the car for many fishing and camping adventures. Rose, known as Dolly to her extended family, was also very proud of her Norwegian heritage. Dolly faithfully attended as many of the Annual Nodland Reunions as she was able to, up to the 50th one in 2018.
Rose is survived by her children, Greg Nickel, Dickinson, Cheryl (Tim) Lantz, Dickinson and Jeffrey (Tina) Nickel, Millsboro, Del.; four grandchildren, Brittany (Kyle) Wentz, Christina (Jimmy) Jorgensen, Rachel Lantz and Madison Nickel; five great-grandchildren; brother, George (Kayleen) Nodland, Dickinson; and brother-in-law, Gordon Kucera, Bismarck.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn, on October 2, 2009; two infant children; and five sisters, Arleen Thorstad, Rosella Hauck, Grace Zastoupil, Florence Kucera and Marles Tschaekofske. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Badlands Ministries or the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
