Richard A. “Dick”, Welk, 76, Dickinson, died Monday, February 10, 2020 at his home. Dick’s Liturgy of Word Service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, February 14, 2020 at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Bob Zent presiding. There will be a Gathering of Family & Friends on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Richard A. Welk was born October 25, 1943 at Harvey, the son of August and Thresia Doris (Adam) Welk. He was the second youngest of seven children. He was raised and educated in Rugby where he attended Rugby High School.
He was united in marriage to RoAnn Fitzner in 1963 and to this union there were three children born.
Dick met the love of his life in 1996, Kathy Frederick Mischel. Kathy’s family became his family when they were united in marriage on August 7, 2010. They lived many years in Dickinson where he loved the work he did at Dickinson Lumber, Ace Hardware, and Hulsing & Associates as a project manager. They made their retirement home in the Killdeer Mountains. They took great pride in the developing of their property called Thousand Oaks. Due to medical reasons, they returned to Dickinson to be closer to family and health care.
He was involved in numerous civic and community activities while in Dickinson, such as, Jaycees, Trinity Mardi Gras, Roughrider Commission, Roughrider Archery, Badlands Art Assoc., and the city of Dickinson Board of Adjustments. Dick was also a published author with his first book being published in 2018. He had a passion for poetry and art, having written and painted numerous poems and paintings. In his spare time he enjoyed the outdoors, camping, hunting, and being with family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Kathy; their children, Dean (Paulette) Welk, Dickinson, Lisa (Amy) Welk, Apple Valley, Minn., Sara (Todd) Anderson, Dickinson, Scott (Tammie) Mischel, New Castle, Okla., and Sheri (Troy) Frieze, Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Saraya (Zachary) Prociv, Tyler Welk, Jared Welk, Parker Anderson, Jacob Mischel, Savannah Mischel, Emily Frieze and Tanner Frieze; two great-grandchildren, Luke Mischel and Sutton Prociv; siblings, Agnes (John) Heilman, Rugby, Lorraine Jelsing, Bismarck, Balzer Welk, Rugby, and Charles (Bobbi) Welk, Mandan; and several very special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Nick; sister, Marie Selensky; and nieces, Beth Welk and Danie Thomssen.
