Derrick J. “DJ” Berger, 36, Richardton, died on Friday, May 3, 2019 at Sanford Health Bismarck with his family by his side. There will be a Liturgy of Word Service for DJ at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB presiding. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends on Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a Time of Sharing Memories at 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Derrick James “DJ” Berger was born in Mandan on June 9, 1982, son of James and Bev (Messer) Berger. DJ was raised and educated in Richardton. He graduated from Richardton/Taylor High School in 2001. He attended for a short time NDSSS in Wahpeton prior to being diagnosed with cancer.
DJ was united in marriage to Crystella Griego and to this union a son, Kutter, was born. DJ learned from his dad the skills that helped him work jobs in the horse, ranch and farm business throughout high school and shortly after. He then began a career in the oil and gas business, most recently as a pipeline operator with Marathon Petroleum.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, all types of sports, team roping and playing golf. His main focus in life was spending time with Kutter, going to the movies, going out to eat, shooting, playing pool and darts.
DJ is survived by his son, Kutter, Dickinson; his dog, Butch; his loyal horses, Red and Jasper; his mother, Bev Berger, Mott; sister, Amanda (Aaron) Boerboom, Mott; grandma, Florence Berger, Dickinson; nephew, Birch Boerboom, Mott; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his dad, Jim. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Above and Beyond Foundation and checks can be sent to Sanford Health Bismarck.
