Joseph M. Herold, 90, Dickinson, died Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Sanford Health in Bismarck. Joseph’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 22, 2021 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. William Ruelle as celebrant. Inurnment will be at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 Honor Guard. Visitation will be on Monday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil at 6 p.m. with Deacon Bob Stockert presiding.
Joe was born September 26, 1930 at the family home in Lefor. His parents were Michael and Magdalena (Dassinger) Herold. He was educated in Lefor where he graduated from high school. After high school, Joe was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He was an operator of a M-41 tank and was involved in several major battles during the Korean Conflict. Among those were the battle of T-Bone, Pork Chop Hill, Bunker Hill and Triangle Hill. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained at the Battle of Old Baldy. He was honorably discharged from the Army in June 1953.
After returning to the states, Joe met the love of his life Phyllis Redetzke. They were married on March 1, 1954 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and to this union six children were born.
After he was married, Joe worked at different farms and ranches in Southwest, North Dakota. He went to Moler Barber College in Fargo and returned to Dickinson to work at Kappel’s Barber Shop. While working at Kappel’s he took the Postal Service Exam and ended up getting hired by the U. S. Postal Service. He worked for the USPS from December 1957 to May 1989.
Upon Joe’s retirement from the Post Office he started his second career in community service. He was very proud of his years in the military and continued with being a member of the Veterans Honor Guard for 60 plus years. He spent many hours volunteering at House of Manna, the Amen Food Pantry, and many other organizations where he could lend a hand.
Joe was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and served as a choir member and as an usher. For several years, he served as an officer for the St. Anthony Club. He was also a member of the VFW, Eagles, St. Pius, RSVP Senior Center, APWU Local 590 and the Happy Sing Alongs Choral Group.
He was an avid card player, enjoyed doing volunteer work, singing, baking and quilting. All of his grandkids are proud of their “grandpa quilts”.
Joseph is survived by his children, Daniel (Mary Ellen), Dickinson, Randall (Heidi), Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Thomas, Dickinson, Karla (Al) Schweiger, Dickinson, and Michael (Nan), Hettinger; daughter-in-law, Joyce Herold, Dickinson; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sisters, Angeline Nuss, Dickinson and Evelyn Herold, Dickinson; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis; son, Timothy; parents; brothers, John and George; sisters, Katherine Wanner, Fran Lawrence, Betty Gerber Hamel, Regina Reindel, Rose Carlson and Maggie Kuhn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery or the Stark County Veterans Memorial Association.
