Roy’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton, with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Richardton American Legion Theo R. Zech Post #180. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the church with a rosary at 8 p.m.

Roy was born to Fred and Mary (Zentner) Schubert, and raised on a farm 10 miles north of Richardton, along with his nine brothers and sisters. He attended a country farmhouse school located about a mile from their farm. During World War II, he was drafted into the Army Air Corp at Fort Snelling, Minn. on July 19, 1945. On August 2, 1946 he was honorably discharged from Fort Sheridan, Ill., and returned to Richardton.

On November 20, 1951, Roy married Shirley Kaufman at St. Mary’s Church in Richardton. They were married 62 years. He loved hunting, fishing, and trapping. In his younger days, he would always follow his passion for the outdoors, having his sons and nephews join in any season when their was something to be caught. Each weekend that he could get away, he would gather up anyone to fish at the lake. The Schubert family had a trailer that remained out at the lake for the whole summer. In early Fall, he would take everyone deer hunting. After that, it was fur-trapping. Those who were involved with that have many stories to tell about the smelling potions and the fleas!!!

Roy worked many different jobs throughout the Richardton area until 1966, when he was hired at the Richardton Memorial Hospital as the maintenance man. Over the years working at the hospital, he faced many tasks and saw many changes. He was in charge of keeping the standby units operating during the ice storm in 1983, when the hospital was without power or water for three days. Also, before oxygen pipes were built into the structure of the building in 1969, he had to carry the heavy oxygen tanks to various rooms. Another important step forward for him working at the hospital happened when the incinerator was installed. Prior to that, everything had to be burned outside on a cement square. He worked for four doctors during his tenure: Drs Wolf, Slominski, Shwarok, and Jones. Roy retired from the hospital in May, 1992.

After retirement Roy took up making clocks out of slabs of wood, collected from California, and making jewelry with rocks from his frequent rock hunts throughout North Dakota and Montana. He would then spend his weekends selling his wares at various rock shows throughout North Dakota and Montana.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his four children: Roger Schubert, Richardton, Linda (Steven) Wanner, Sacramento, Calif., Bruce (Cheri) Schubert, Sacramento, and Gerald (Yvette) Schubert, Dickinson; four grandchildren, Jason and Nicole Wanner, Tristan and Sienna Schubert; and one sister, Delores Godes. Roy is preceded in death by his wife Shirley on November 10, 2013; his parents; one infant son; and eight brothers and sisters.

Memorials are preferred to the St. Mary’s Social Center or to the St. Mary’s Cemetery.
