Gerald “Jerry” Riemer, 83, Dickinson, formerly of Halliday, died Wednesday, September 9, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dickinson. Jerry’s funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 12, 2015, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Brian Davidson officiating. Interment and burial rites will follow at the Dickinson Cemetery. Visitation will be on Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to services.
Gerald Riemer was born May 28, 1932 at Dickinson the son of Frank and Myrtle (Irons) Riemer. He was raised and educated in the Halliday area, graduating from Halliday High School. He went on to attend Dickinson State Teacher’s College, and then taught school for a short period of time.
Gerald married his sweetheart Doris Kling on December 12, 1953 at Vang Lutheran Church south of Dunn Center. They purchased a section of land with only a water well on it and built their ranch and farm from scratch. They remained on the place for the next 40 years. Horses and cattle were his life. He raised and broke several nice colts. Being an excellent cow hand, he handled animals with respect.
He and Dori wintered several times in Arizona, Texas and also Montana, and each return trip home when they hit the North Dakota border, Jerry would always say, “North Dakota, the best place on the earth”. They also enjoyed their trips to Hawaii and Curacao. He was a firm believer of respect, honesty and love, and taught his children the same.
Jerry was President of the Halliday Saddle Club, a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, and an associate member of the Legion. He was an excellent hunter and fisherman. Being outdoors was where he preferred to be. He excelled in Team Roping, enjoyed bowling, and was a pool shark. He could beat all of his friends at a game. Following open heart surgery, he enjoyed reading and watching old western movies. Special moments in his life was on top of his horse “Big Red” with a rope in his hand heading out for a roundup or branding. Smiles were brought on by fishing trips in the boat on glassy smooth water, yelling for Dori to bring the net, I got a beauty of a walleye.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 62 years, Doris; their three children, Scotty (Ann) Riemer, Raritan, New Jersey, Reyne (Dennis) Kubischta, Dickinson, and Shane (Lori) Riemer, Bismarck; they were adopted grandparents to Jurnee, Trae, Rowyn and Taiven Murray; and his sister-in-law, Lily Jean Riemer, Wanette, Okla. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bob; and sister and brother-in-law, Joanne (James) Johnson.
In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the American Heart Association or to a charity of the donors choice.
