Roy Hewson, 79, New England, died Saturday, March 1, 2014 at his home. Roy’s funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, March 6, 2014, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, New England, with Pastor Janel Kolar officiating. Interment will take place at the New England Cemetery. Military Honors will follow the service and be provided by the New England American Legion Anton Ulijohn Post 66. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, and will continue at the church one hour prior to services.
Roy Marlin Hewson was born April 23, 1934, in Slope County, the son of Earl and Daisy (Remington) Hewson. He was raised and educated in the New England area, graduating from New England High School in 1954.
He joined the United States Army in 1954 and served honorably until his discharge in 1956. Returning to home, he was united in marriage to Fern Sparlund on October 20, 1956, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. They lived a farm by New England until 1959, when they purchased a ranch north of Rhame. They remained on the place until retiring and moving to New England in 1999.
He belonged to the archery club. He enjoyed golfing, hunting (esp. bow), bird watching, playing with the grandkids and great-grandkids, finding different rocks and polishing them, and camping and fishing.
Roy is survived by his wife, Fern; their eight children, Rod (Lola) Hewson, Dickinson, Karen (Mark) Koller, New England, Jerry (Shelly) Hewson, West Fargo, Bonnie (Gary) Morel, New England, Linda (Mike) Spletto, Geismar, La., Carla (Eric) Morel, Dickinson, Jessica (Rick) Morel, Bismarck, and Stonie Hewson, Rhame; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; six siblings, Harvey (Donna) Hewson, Amidon, Dewey Hewson, Williston, Earlene Schuhrke, Clawson, Mich., Sherryl (Roger) Ladson, Rosebud, Mont., Beverly (Dave) Medalen, Willow City, and Vivian (David) Dinius, New England; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger and Lee Hewson; sister, Rita Ehrmantrout; and brother-in-law, Ed Schuhrke.
