Irene K. Buckman, 92, Dickinson, died Thursday, June 20, 2013 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Irene’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Michael Wolters officiating. Interment will follow at Belfield Lutheran Cemetery, Belfield. Visitation will be on Monday, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Irene Schoenbeck was born June 17, 1921 at Zap, the daughter of John and Katherine (Fuchs) Schoenbeck. She was raised and educated in Zap. Irene took a train with some girl friends to Portland, Ore., and running short on money she went to work at the Kaiser Ship Yards as one of the “Rosie the Riveters” during WWII. Following her grandmothers death in 1944, she returned to North Dakota, and in 1945 attended beauty school.

Irene moved to Dickinson and worked as a beautician for six months, with nine dollars in her pocket she moved to Belfield and opened her own beauty shop, with hair cuts being 35 cents and perms being $5.50 to $6.50. She remained a licensed beautician for 50 years.

While in Belfield she met a man home on furlough, and on January 25, 1946 she was united in marriage to Clarence Buckman at Belfield Lutheran Church. Irene has made Belfield her home until October 2009 when she became a resident of the St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.

She was a member of the Belfield Senior Citizens, the Belfield Homemakers, the Pioneer Birthday Club, St. Peter’s Ladies Aid and LWML, and the Belfield Germans from Russia. She enjoyed gardening, card playing, sewing, word find puzzles, baking, cooking, embroidery, and especially spending time with family & friends.

Irene is survived by her son, Robert Buckman, Mesa, Ariz.; sisters-in-law, Bonnie Buckman, Belfield, Betty Schoenbeck, Belfield, and Mae (Jim) Muckle, Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence on August 31, 1975; her daughter, Katherine on May 24, 2013; brothers, Louie Schoenbeck and Herman Schoenbeck; nine infant brothers and sisters; brother-in-law, Lewis Buckman; and sister-in-law, Helen Schoenbeck.
