Tony Kathrein, 84, New England, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Health Center, Dickinson. Tony’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, March 8, 2010 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England, with Fr. Greg Staudinger as the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Victor Dvorak. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with a rosary and vigil at 3 p.m., visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.
Tony was born November 15, 1925 on the family farm in Hettinger County near New England, the son of John J. and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Kathrein. He was raised and educated in the New England area.
Tony married Frances Steiner on June 19, 1956 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. Together they lived and farmed six miles west of New England in Slope County. Following their retirement they continued to make the farm home.
Tony was a past member of the Eagle’s and German-Hungarian. He enjoyed Polka music and dancing, spending time with his horses, playing cards, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Tony is survived by his wife, Frances; two sons, Larry (Rima) Kathrein, Colorado Springs, Colo., and Lee (Melanie) Kathrein, Dickinson; seven grandchildren, Morgan, Michaela, Samantha, Rasha, Zachary, April and John; two great-grandchildren; six sisters, Sr. Mary Isabel, Mankato, Minn., Ann Schaeffer, Dickinson, Betty (Pete) Krauter, Ada, Minn., Rosemary (Jim) Ochesnfeld, Hot Springs, Ark., Marge (Joe) Krauter, Fridley, Minn., and Barbara (Les) Parker, Arvada, Colo.; and two brothers, Jack (Ann) Kathrein, Amidon, and Nick (Rosella) Kathrein, Dickinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Lenny; two sisters, Eleanor Tarmann and Kathryn Kathrein; and a brother, John.
