Kathryn Schmidt, 90, Dickinson, died Monday, August 10, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Health Center, Dickinson. Kathryn’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 13, 2009 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church with Fr. Todd Kreitinger as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service. There will be a rosary led by Deacon Victor Dvorak & Vigil with Deacon Ron Keller presiding at 7 P.M., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Kathryn was born March 5, 1919, at the Rieckmann family home southeast of Dickinson, the daughter of Herman and Anna (Reinhold) Rieckmann.
She married Frank M. Schmidt on February 21, 1938, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dickinson. They lived with Frank’s parents until April 1, 1940, when they moved to the family farm southeast of Dickinson. They resided there until August of 1988 when they moved to 941 Alder Avenue in Dickinson, where she had resided ever since. Frank died February 25, 1999. She continued to live independently at home, enjoying many visits from her children and family.
Kathryn was an active homemaker, caring for their nine children. She was an especially hospitable host and was well known for her gracious, welcoming spirit, cooking skills and card playing enthusiasm. Nobody left her home without a meal, coffee or a dessert.
She was well known for her embroidery work. An embroidered dish towel by Kathryn was a collectors item among her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and many friends and neighbors. Kathryn was an active supporter of Catholic education and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and St. Patrick Catholic Church parishes. She was a member of the German-Hungarian Club, the Eagles Club, the St. Anthony Club and the Happy Local Farmers Union Co-op.
Kathryn is survived by three daughters, Leona (James) Odermann, Belfield, Betty, Dickinson, Diana (Alan) Hilden, Billings, Mont.; three sons, Arvin (Carolyn), Aurora, Ill, Rodney (Cathi), Glendive, Mont., Milan, Dickinson; three daughters-in-law, Theresa Andersen, New Rockford, Mary, Dickinson, and Bernice, Missoula, Mont.; three sisters, Emma John, New Salem; Hilda Dassinger and Ann Frank, Dickinson; and one brother, Bill (Alice), Kennewick, Wash.; 24 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, three sons, Donald, Clifford, Robert, an infant son Sonny, three sisters and two brothers.
