Jeffrey Schmalz, 40, Dickinson died Wednesday, May 6, 2009 in Dickinson. Jeff’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Visitation will from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday at Ladbury Funeral Service with a vigil at 7 p.m., with Deacon Ralph Stockert presiding.

Jeffrey Schmalz was born October 11, 1968 in Dickinson, the son of LaVerne and Delores (Gartner) Schmalz. Jeff was raised in Dickinson and graduated from the Dickinson High School in 1989.

Jeff enjoyed many things like camping and fishing. He also loved mowing yards and doing yard work for other people but his true passion was his involvement in Special Olympics. He loved and was very active in Special Olympics. He has won several trophies, medals and ribbons. Jeff was so proud of his accomplishments. He was very honored to be chosen to be part of the USA Team ND that competed in Ireland in June 2003. While at the world games, he was part of the USA team that played unified volley ball. In 2006, Jeff went to the National Games in Ames, Iowa and played on the basketball team for Special Olympics. He was involved in many sports including bowling, handball, basketball, track and field, volleyball, and unified softball.

Jeff wore his heart of gold on his shirt sleeve and would share it with anyone that crossed his path. He loved to tease and joke with anyone he met. His friends and family meant the world to him. Jeff lived a simple life and needed nothing other than the love of his friends and family.

Jeff is survived by two brothers Jerry Schmalz, Bismarck, Ron (Bonnie) Schmalz, Bowman; three sisters, Rita (Blake) Heinz, Brocket, Joann Erickson, Aberdeen, S.D., and Jane (Ken) Wagner Bismarck; he has 12 nieces and nephews, Crystal and Josh Schriock, Kristie, Korey, and Kyle Erickson, Brittany, Ashley, Cole, Shelby, and Clay Schmalz, MaKayla and Tyrell Heinz. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Darrell.
