Robert M. Schneider, 82, formerly of Belfield, died Sunday, February 1, 2009 at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Health Center, Dickinson. Robert’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, February 5, 2009 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Jim Braaten as the celebrant. Inurnment will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Belfield. Military honors will be provided by the Belfield American Legion William C. Blair Post #144 following the service. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. There will be a rosary and vigil at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Jerry Volk presiding.
Robert M. Schneider was born January 31, 1927 at Glen Ullin, the son of Nick and Mary (Bleth) Schneider. The family moved to Belfield where he was raised and educated, having graduated from Belfield High School.
Bob joined the US Navy on January 26, 1945 and served honorably until his discharge on August 24, 1946. He returned to Belfield and went to work for Mann’s Automotive. Bob married Ann Fritz on October 24, 1950 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson. They lived in Dickinson until 1953 when the family moved to Belfield. Bob went to work for his dad and uncle at McGarvey and Schneider Chevrolet, and eventually he and his brother Ernie purchased the dealership. Ernie and Bob operated the dealership until the mid 1980’s when they closed. He went to work for North Dakota Job Service in Dickinson, retiring from there in 2002. He and Ann moved to Dickinson in 1998.
Bob enjoyed fishing, playing cards, reading and truly cherished having family together. He was a life member of the Belfield Fire Department, Elks, a KC Member, Belfield City Commission, and a board member of the Badlands Human Service Center. After retirement he enjoyed volunteering at the hospital.
Robert is survived by his wife, Ann; their five children, Connie (Rick Presnell) Stern, Boise, Idaho, Bob C. (Renee) Schneider, Dickinson, Nancy (Joel Bleth) Samson, Dickinson, Michael Schneider, Dickinson, and Mari Kim (Toby) Zastoupil, Dickinson; seven grandchildren, Darren (Dani) Tessier, Jessica Schneider, Nathan Samson, Alexis, Emily and Katelyn Zastoupil, and Britney Schneider; two great-grandsons, Dreyden Huncovsky and Henry Tessier; and one brother, Ernie (Vicky) Schneider, Belfield. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jackie Lynn; and one sister, Alice Kelly.
