Melanie “Mel” Fitterer, 55, New England, died of injuries sustained in a pedestrian/motor vehicle accident on Saturday, June 25, 2022 at CHI St. Alexius, Bismarck. Melanie’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 30, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England with Fr. Dennis Schafer as celebrant and Fr. Gary Benz, Fr. Marvin Klemmer, Fr. John Paul Gardner and Fr. Paul Gardner as concelebrants. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, New England. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil at 6:30 p.m. with Deacon Mike Mellmer and Deacon Ross Reiter presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Melanie Jahner was born on March 22, 1967 in Dickinson, the daughter of Tony and Donna (Pekas) Jahner. She was raised and educated in Regent where she graduated from Regent High School in 1985. She went on to attend Bismarck Jr. College and Dickinson State College prior to finishing her degree in Elementary Education at Minot State College in 1989.
Melanie was united in marriage to Gregg Fitterer on September 22, 1989 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England. Mel was very proud of their three great kids and she especially loved being a mother, grandmother and aunt. She never missed attending a family activity or event. She taught elementary school in New England and Regent for 14 years and loved all of her students dearly. After her teaching career, she worked at the women’s correction center, the Credit Union and was very involved in her community.
She belonged to St. Mary’s Altar Guild. She was an amazing cook and enjoyed having family and friends around. Mel enjoyed scrapbooking, attending live music events, and watching movies.
Mel is survived by her husband, Gregg; three children, Alexia Fitterer, Bismarck, Paige (special friend, Travis Renshaw) Fitterer, Elmhurst, IL and Austin (special friend, Taylor Ohlhauser) Fitterer, Mandan; grandson, Zander Fitterer; granddog, Frida; parents, Tony and Donna Jahner, Dickinson; siblings, Rich (Sheri) Jahner, Surprise, AZ, Spence Jahner, Bozeman, MT, and Shemayne (Kevin) McCarthy, Boise, ID; numerous nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Ruth Fitterer, Dickinson; in-laws, Todd (Adele) Fitterer, New England, Chris (Rhonda) Fitterer, New England, and Vicki (Riley) Mattson, South Heart.
She was preceded in death by her infant sister, Renelda Jahner; and father-in-law, Willie Fitterer.
