Judy A. Torstenson, 76, Dickinson, died on Sunday, June 2, 2024 at CHI St. Alexius Health Bismarck. Judy’s Liturgy of Word Service will be at 10 a.m., Monday, June 10, 2024 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Deacon Al Schwindt presiding. Inurnment will take place at Dickinson Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service with a Time of Sharing Stories & Memories at 6:30 p.m.
Judy was born to Vincent and Victoria (Hibl) Barta on July 22, 1947 in Dickinson. She was the oldest of the Barta family children. Judy was a waitress at Eva’s Pizza where she met Joel Torstenson. They were united in marriage on September 7, 1968 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson and to this union they had two children, Tyler, and Tennille.
Judy worked at various retail jobs, including White Drug, Rustand Jewelers, JCPenney and KDIX Radio. She then went to work for herself as a house cleaner. Judy and Tyler also delivered the Dickinson Press and Bismarck Tribune for many years. Judy loved to watch Vikings football, Twins baseball, and in person the Badlands Big Sticks baseball team and her children’s coed softball team. She was also an avid bowler. For many years she volunteered at Southwest Speedway and for National Mutual Benefit. Judy was a wonderful cook and baker.
Judy’s most important and favorite job and hobby was being a mother to her two children. In July of 1984, she became a single mother when Joel passed away. Judy devoted the rest of her life to her children to the very end.
Judy is survived by her children, Tyler Torstenson, Dickinson, and Tennille Torstenson (Ray Wells), Dickinson; two brothers, Richard (Gerri) Barta, Arizona, and Doug Barta, Montana; two sisters, Joyce Barta, Dickinson, and June Haller, Dickinson; half-siblings, Don (Ventia) Blatz, Minnesota, and Janice Frost, Missouri; in-laws, Janet (David) Barta, Minnesota, and Tom Torstenson, Gladstone; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joel; her parents; brother, David; and sister, Shirley.
