Anton “Tony” Schumacher was born April 26, 1937 on the family farm south of Halliday to Frank and Magdalena (Fleckenstein) Schumacher, where he grew up and attended Big Flat Country School #1 through the eighth grade. He attended Assumption Abbey in Richardton, where he learned welding and woodworking. Tony was a member of the graduating class of 1955.
Tony joined the United States Army on May 7, 1958 stationed at Fort Lewis, Washington and served honorably until May 6, 1960. While in the Army, he became a Battalion Welder. Tony was united in marriage to Claudia Klee on July 6, 1959, at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Halliday. After leaving the service, Tony and Claudia lived in Williston until 1964. During that time, he worked as a welder in the oil fields. In 1964 they bought Claudia’s parents’ farm south of Halliday. They farmed, milked cows, and raised various livestock. His welding skills enabled him to repair and build just about anything. Tony and Claudia retired in 1999 and sold the farm to their sons. They built a new home on the farm, and Tony continued to help their sons with farming when needed.
He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, the Holy Name Society, Church Council, and served as a Board of Director at Cenex in Richardton. At age 50, he earned his private pilot license and enjoyed flying for many years. Tony also enjoyed woodworking and creating stained glass pieces. He assisted in renovating St. Paul’s Catholic Church, including making and installing the stained glass windows. Most of all Tony loved farming.
