Theodore “Ted” Schields, Jr., 97, Dickinson, passed away Saturday, August 24, 2024 with family at his side at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. Ted’s Funeral Service will be at 3 p.m., Thursday, August 29, 2024 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Scott Erickson as officiant. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 Honor Guard. Interment will take place at 12 p.m. CT , Friday, August 30, 2024 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.
Theodore “Ted” Schields was born July 3, 1927 to Ted Sr. and Amelia (Lindemann) Schields. He attended Halliday High School and Dickinson State Teachers College, having graduated in 1952 with a degree in Elementary and Secondary Education.
Ted served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955 with an honorable discharge. He was united in marriage to Charlotte Bentz on August 14, 1955 in Hazen. He continued teaching and attended UND where he earned his Masters Degree in School Administration in 1958. Ted taught and was in administration at various schools which included: Beach, Denhoff, Hazen, White Shield, Eagle Butte, SD, and Wahpeton Indian School. He was elected and served as County Superintendent of Schools from 1980-1988 in Richland County, southeast ND.
He liked to restore antique cars and was a member of the Pioneer Auto Club in Bismarck. Ted was a past member of the NDEA and the North Dakota School Administration Association and most currently was a member of the ND Retired Teachers Association.
Ted is survived by his wife, Charlotte; two sons, Mark (Sharon Gegelmann) Schields, Dickinson and Paul Schields, West Lafayette, IN; three grandchildren, Luke, Rachel, and Rebekah; sister, Eleanor Akidakis, Mandan; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Richard and Raymond; sisters, Tillie, Edna, Hertha, Irene, and Hilda.
The family extends their thanks and appreciation to Park Avenue Villa, CHI Hospice, and St. Luke’s for the care provided for Ted.
