I first saw daylight on April 22, 1934. I was born to Adam and Veronica (Wock) Wolf in a farm house north of Dickinson with no doctor or medical help around. My folks lived on a small rented farmstead until my dad was killed in a road accident when I was 18 months old, so I never got to know him. I have a brother Dan who is four years older than I am. This left my young mother a widow for the rest of her life with no real home ever or job since it was during the great depression and outside work was pretty scarce. The only alternative was for her to apply for the state assistance to raise her two sons and try to get by without a whole lot. Making a living at that time was a struggle.

I went to St. Joseph’s Parochial School through the eighth grade and Dickinson Central High School through senior year, graduating in 1952. During the summers in high school, I drifted up and down the Little Missouri River working on different ranches and dreaming of the time that I would be able to stay and keep on working on a ranch in this same area. In between ranch jobs and weekends during high school I worked for Andrew Johnston, a retired rancher who owned a saddle and leather goods store in Dickinson. This is when I met a very special young woman, Irene Hurinenko, who grew up west of Killdeer, she got my attention and I also grew very fond of her. This was in 1953. In 1956 while working on the Logging Camp Ranch on the river I took on a new job with the NDSA as a brand inspector at West Fargo Union Stockyards. I came back to Dickinson and we got married on October 13, 1956 then back to the job at West Fargo. I never did feel at home in Fargo so back to the Badlands we went again to stay.

George is survived by his wife, Irene Wolf; 25 grandchildren; two nephews, Scott (Carmela) Wolf and Doug (Col) Wolf; and numerous special friends. He was preceded in death by his son, Rodney Wolf; infant daughter, Jodie Wolf; his parents; and his brother and sister-in-law, Dan and Judy Wolf.

No flowers are preferred. Please give memorials to the Amidon Food Pantry.
