Grandma June was born June 3, 1927 in Lefor to John and Margaret (Lefor) Schneider. She was the oldest of 12 siblings: (two of which died in infancy) Greg, Jim, Mae, Lincoln, Jeanne, Rose, Marge, Nita, John and Fran. She grew up in Lefor attending her freshman year at St. Benedicts in Minnesota then returning to Lefor until graduation where she was named Valedictorian of her class.
In 1945 she married John Peters. Together they lived on John’s farm south of Richardton and later moved to Lefor then to Dickinson. Together they raised four children, Gary, Tim, Randy and Deb.
Anyone that knew “Grandma June” would say that her finest quality was her compassion for people, especially her family. She would give the shirt off her back, the gardening shoes off her feet and all her heart to those she loved or needed her.
Coffee groups or cards? Not mom. Instead you’d find her up early summer mornings working in her garden and keeping her yard and flowers immaculate or playing organ, baking, canning, or cooking. She loved nothing more than cooking huge meals for her family ~ the kind that filled their bellies and hearts. She was happiest when her kitchen was loud, crowded, and full of laughter. The aroma of chicken noodle soup, butterhorns, cinnamon twists and poppyseed strudel (just to name a few) drifted throughout her home daily, with kids, grandkids and great-grandkids often stopping over knowing they’d get a big hug and always have something homemade to enjoy.
Mom started playing organ (self taught) in 6th grade and continued until she was 88 years old. Her light fingers danced over the keys on the organ. She played in her local parishes, nursing homes and for hundreds of weddings, talent shows, anniversaries and funerals over her 76 years of playing piano/organ. She has touched many lives with her music.
Grandma June was the biggest cheerleader and sports fan traveling and going nonstop to basketball, football, track, hockey or baseball/softball games of her kids/grandkids. You could see her proud smile and hear her yelling, “great job!” all the way across the gym or stadium.
Family vacations (including grandkids) were a highlight of our summers/winters whether it was taking us to South Dakota skiing, Montana to the mountains hiking, trips to Yellowstone, Valley Fair in Minneapolis, Disney World/Bahamas cruise or Las Vegas. They are memories we’ll always treasure.
Mom was known for her Christmas decorations which completely filled her yard. She took great pride in placing them in the perfect location every year so that everyone could see every light and enjoy the drive by their house. Numerous times their home was voted as the best decorated in Dickinson.
Throughout her career in Lefor and South Heart as head Postmaster, Mom enjoyed most of all seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces as she would give them a sucker every time they’d step through that post office door.
Her Mossett Bay lake cabin was especially important to her as all of her four children have lake homes there as well. She loved spending hours on the boat fishing, cooking and entertaining when her siblings would come to visit every summer. It was her home away from home.
June was preceded in death by her late husband, John Peters (2016) in which they were married almost 70 years. She is survived by her three sons, Gary (Polly), Tim (Mary), and Randy (Karla); daughter, Deb (Bob) Rising; along with 12 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren, Greg (Sheri) Peters and children, Rayden, Kynaston, Brezlyn and Elkan; Denae (Terry) Eckelberg and girls, Madison, Makenna, and Macy; Kimberly (Kyle) Larson and sons, Caden and Cammen; Mike (Marha) Peters and children, Carson, Livvy and Warrick; Scott (Elora) Peters and sons, Weston and Branch; Tom (Bridget) Peters and son, Laudie; Brad (Julia) Peters and sons, Blake, Jace and Collin; Mitch (Jenni) and children, Quade and Charley; Jayden (Haylee) and girls, Quinn and Nora; Brent (Andrea) Rising and girls, Marlowe, Alette and Maret; Dustin (Rachel) Rising and sons, Brecken, Tavin and Croix, and Jordan (Mary) Rising and sons, Cade and Beckett.
Please join us for lunch after the service as Mom would be disappointed if you left without eating.
In lieu of flowers, June’s family requests that you honor her memory with donations/memorials to St. Elizabeth’s Church in Lefor or Queen of Peace Catholic parish in Dickinson.
