Albert Joseph “AJ” Hofer, 28, died by suicide on Monday, August 21, 2017 after a courageous and long fight with depression and anxiety. There will be a Gathering of Family and Friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. with a Celebration of Life Service at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
AJ was born into the world with a contagious smile and easy-going lovable personality. He struggled with inner chaos which was partially hidden to those around him and which medicine could not cure, a therapist could not quiet, and our affection and love could not soothe.
In the end despite his courage and best efforts the transparent disease was incurable. AJ’s temperament was both his blessing and curse. He was a gentle person, not given to ego, always overly anxious not to hurt others or to claim too much space for himself. Unfortunately, no amount of encouragement was able to take away this disease that somehow deprived him of his full freedom.
AJ was a welder by trade. He loved to hunt and he thought he could fish. According to AJ the “Sharks” were the greatest hockey team. He enjoyed football, UND Hockey, camping, and music. He was an artist and creative thinker with the ability to see a better vision. AJ always loved to reminisce and share stories. Family and friends were his everything.
AJ is survived by his dad, Gary (wife Rebecca) Hofer; siblings, Gary Hofer, Sheri (Wallace) Twist and Leann Hofer; nieces and nephews, Cameron Hofer, Bradan Hofer, Austin Hofer, Aryana Twist and Xavier Twist; best friend and cousin, Tyler Hofer; special uncle, Ricky Hofer; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Verleen Hofer; infant brother, Robert Joseph Hofer; and his grandparents. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
