Avis L. Colgrove, 88, formerly of New England died Saturday, November 15, 2008 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Funeral services for Avis will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Lisa Lewton officiating. Interment will follow at Sunny Slope Cemetery, Mott. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday at Ladbury Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Avis L. Lyngen was born May 8, 1920 in Reeder, the daughter of Edward and Elsie (Hoeft) Lyngen. She was raised in Reeder and graduated from Reeder High School. She received her 2 year Standard Teaching Certificate from Dickinson State Teachers College, later returned to summer school and received her B.S. in Elementary Education from Mayville State.

Avis taught briefly in Regent, Idaho, and Bucyrus. Avis married Edgar W. Colgrove on July 31, 1947 in Reeder. She returned to New England to teach in New England and at a country school. They returned to New England where she resumed teaching in Regent until her husbands illness forced her to retire. They had also lived in Miller, SD from 1961 to 1963 where they operated a bowling alley. Avis became a resident of St. Benedict’s Health Center in 2003.

Avis belonged to the Eastern Star, was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson Elks, and the Norwegian Ethnic group. She enjoyed playing Bridge, reading, crossword puzzles, was an avid baseball fan (the Atlanta Braves), and watching her grandchildren as they participated in high school sports and other activities.

Avis is survived by five children, Carol (Daryl) Jung, New England, Roberta (Larry) Ketterling, New England, Larry (Avis) Colgrove, Ft. Lupton, Colo., Linda (special friend – Jack) Peterman, Sioux Falls, SD, and Linell Patchin, Joplin, Mo.; eight grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was prece3ded in death by her husband, Edgar on December 20, 1982; her parents; one sister, Ruth Halvorson; grandson, Leland Jung; sons-in-law, Michael A. Jung, Ronald Boldt and Jack Patchin.
