Awald Markwardt, 99, Dickinson, died Sunday, November 8, 2009 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Awald’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., CST, Saturday, November 14, 2009 at the Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home Chapel, Cando with Mr. Mike Hermanson officiating. Interment will follow at the Egeland Cemetery, Egeland. There will be a visitation at the Evergreen for the residents and then a visitation one hour prior to services on Saturday.

Ewald Emil Erhard Markwardt was born October 9, 1910 in Arndt, the youngest of 11 children of Fredrich and Maria (Steuslof) Markwardt.

He was united in marriage to Bernice M. Jennum on January 11, 1935 in Cando. Awald farmed for many years in the Egeland area, and eventually retired from the North Dakota State Highway Department at Cando in 1975.

Bernice and Awald moved to Dickinson in 1985 to be near the Badlands they had enjoyed visiting over the years. Awald enjoyed the game of baseball and watching NFL football with his sons.

Awald is survived by his children, Jack (Ellen) Markwardt, Dickinson, Dave (Lois) Markwardt, Douglas, Wyo., Marjorie (Ray) Holweger, Grand Forks, Don (Amy) Markwardt, Gladstone, and Penny (Brian) Solum, Fargo; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great, great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice in 1996; his parents; two daughters, April and Cindy; two sons, Barry and Ronald; three sisters; seven brothers; one grandson, Bryan Markwardt; and one great-grandson, David White.
