Barbara Newton, 82, of Belfield, died Wednesday, August 19, 2026, surrounded by family at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck. Barbara’s Funeral Service will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, August 27, 2026 at Belfield Lutheran Church, Belfield with Deacon Cheryl Lantz as officiant. Interment will follow at Belfield Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Time of Sharing Stories & Memories at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Some people pass through this life and leave behind memories. Others leave behind a legacy. And then there are the rare people who are the true heroes to a family, that it is impossible to imagine that family without them. Barb Newton was one of those people. On August 19, 2026, our family lost an incredible woman, an extraordinary wife, a beloved mother, grandmother, and the heart of our family.
Barb was a true Grandma in every sense of the word. She was full of life, full of fire, and full of love. She had a personality that could never be overlooked and, if you knew Barb, you knew she probably wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. She loved being surrounded by people, loved to laugh, loved to have fun, and somehow had a way of making herself the center of attention wherever she went. And she was unforgettable.
She had a heart of gold. If someone needed help, Barb was there. It didn’t matter who you were or what you needed she was the person who would step forward. She gave of herself freely and without hesitation. She cared deeply about people, and she spent her life taking care of them. She was the glue that held our family together.
For generations, Barb and her husband, Ken, built their life side by side as beekeepers. They spent their entire lives working with bees, tending their hives, and building something together. But their greatest creation wasn’t the honey they produced or the life they built, it was the family they created and the love they shared. The love between Barb and Ken was something special.
Their marriage was more than a partnership. It was a true love story. Starting in 1967, they worked together, dreamed together, weathered life’s storms together, and spent a lifetime choosing one another. They were Ken and Barbie not just in name, but in the way their lives became inseparable. Their story is one that deserves to be remembered.
Some of the best memories of her are the simple ones of the times spent fishing, laughing, talking, sneaking off to the casino, and just being together. She had an incredible ability to make ordinary moments feel like something worth remembering.
And then there was karaoke. Barb was an incredible singer, and if there was a microphone anywhere nearby, there was a pretty good chance she was going to find it. She had her famous song, of course the one everyone knew was coming sooner or later: the “Pussy Cat Song.” And nobody sang it quite like Grandma Barb. Those are the memories that will make us laugh when we miss her most.
Because Barb wasn’t meant to be remembered only through sadness. She loved life. She loved people. She loved her family. She loved to laugh. She loved to sing. She loved to help. She loved fiercely and without apology. And she left an imprint on all of us that cannot be erased. On August 19, we said goodbye to Grandma Barb. But we did not say goodbye to everything she gave us.
She lives on in her children and grandchildren. She lives on in the stories that will be told around family tables for years to come. She lives on in the laughter that will inevitably follow those stories. She lives on in the people she helped, the lives she touched, and the family she held together.
And she lives on in the love story she and Ken created, a love that became part of the foundation of our family. Grandma Barb was one of a kind, strong, stubborn, hilarious, and loving. She was loud when she wanted to be and somehow, we wouldn’t have wanted her any other way. She was our Queen Bee. She was Grandma Barb. And we were lucky enough to call her ours. Her life was full of love. Her heart was full of gold. Her voice was full of song. And her legacy will live in this family forever. Rest peacefully, Grandma. We love you.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Ken; children, Bekkie (Mike) Tucker, Kenneth Ray (Sara) Newton, and Kelley (Brandy) Newton; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ray and Marie Downs; daughter, Nancy; great-granddaughters, Artemis and Astraea; brothers, Willy, Jimmy Don, and Bo; sisters, Mary and Cleta.
