David A. Nelson, 74, Gladstone, passed away on Friday, June 30, 2023 at the St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson. David’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, July 14, 2023 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Pastor Mike Pretzer officiating. Interment will take place at the Emerson Cemetery, Manning. Visitation will be on Thursday, July 13, 2023 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a time of sharing stories at 6 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
David Andrew Nelson was born on February 24, 1949 in his family home in Emerson, North Dakota to Silas and Rose (Martian) Nelson during a blizzard. David grew up and attended Emerson Country School through the eighth grade, then attended Killdeer High School, graduating in 1967.
He began working for the railroad in Glendive, MT. He worked on the railroad for 42 years before retiring.
David married Janice Lilienthal on October 19, 1968. They had three children, Douglas, James (fiancé, Heidi), and Deanna (Mike) Davenport; and two grandchildren, McKenzie Davenport and Gavin Davenport.
He truly enjoyed spending time at McKenzie Bay with friends and family at their lake home, as well as hunting, fishing and farming.
David is survived by his wife, Janice; sons, Doug and Jim; daughter, Deanna; son-in-law, Mike; grandchildren, McKenzie and Gavin; sisters, Connie (Ron) Stroh, Carla Scott, Debbie (Will) Dukart, Phyllis Nordeng and Rhonda (Phil) Eppler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Silas and Rose Nelson; in-laws, Floyd and Sylvia Lilienthal; and brothers-in-law, Glen Scott, Ron Nordeng, Jim Trogden and Jim Toshoff.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Peace Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice.
