Dolores M. “Dodo” Amann, 81, formerly of Richardton, died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at the Villa Maria Nursing Home, Fargo. Dolores’ Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9:30 a.m., Thursday, August 9, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton, with Fr. Boniface Muggli, OSB as the celebrant. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church.
Dolores was born on July 7, 1931 to Sebastian and Odessa (Wienke) Mischel in Richardton. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School she attended Black Hills Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate.
Returning to Richardton she taught school until marrying Raphael “Ray” Amann on June 3, 1953. They continued to live in Richardton until after the birth of her two children Duane & Delrae. With Ray in the US Air Force, Dolores began a 25 year journey as a military wife. Dolores was always ready to pack up and move the family within days of each deployment. After settling her family in each new town she would continue her career teaching at whatever school her children were attending.
In 1972 Ray retired from the military and the family moved back to Richardton. They purchased Mischel Lumber Company from Dolores’ father. She worked side by side with Ray at the business for 20 years. They closed the business in 1990 to officially “retire”. However Dolores was never one to “sit” and she was always busy and “on the go”. She never lost her enthusiasm for traveling to any destination.
During her time in Richardton, Dolores served many years as a city commissioner and was also the police commissioner for a time. She served as the Richardton Centennial Chairperson and was always volunteering to help at numerous church events and community causes over the years. She was a lifelong member of the American Legion Auxiliary Theodore R. Zech Post 180.
Dolores was an avid reader and quilter. Her embroidered dish towels and quilts were in great demand. Her grandsons Austin & Dustin always looked forward to Grandma’s goodie bags she would prepare for them whenever she saw them.
Due to failing health she moved to Fargo in 2008 to be near her daughter. Ray sold their home in Richardton and joined Dolores in Fargo where they resided at Riverview Retirement Center.
Her pets especially her last kitty Boots was very dear to her. She treasured her children and grandchildren and did her best to spoil them whenever she had the opportunity. She was able to spend time getting to know her 3 year old great-granddaughter Kendal who kept her “great gamma sweet pea” constantly entertained.
Dolores is survived by her husband of 60 years along with her son Duane Amann, Mooresville, N.C.; daughter Delrae (Anthony Zurn) Amann, Fargo; one sister Janice (Delbert) Hegel, Phoenix, Ariz.; grandsons Austin (Megan) Hauck, Fargo, and Dustin (Anna Hollerung) Amann, Lakeville, Minn.; two great-grandchildren Kendal & Brayden Hauck, Fargo. She also leaves her nieces Tiffany Hegel, Phoenix, Ariz., Nicole (Ross) Brookshire, Cedar Park, Texas; and two nephews Charles (Julie Dondoneau) Mischel, Bismarck, and Michael (Kari) Mischel, Bismarck.
She was proceeded in death by her parents, one brother Charles Mischel and his wife Jan and her niece Melissa Mischel along with many aunts and uncles.
Dolores family would like to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Villa Maria especially those working with mom in “Friendship Lane” and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the excellent care, comfort and compassion they gave to Dolores. You were loved by so many. Rest in peace.
