Donald A. Massie, 78, Dickinson, died Tuesday, September 30, 2014 at his home. There will be no services held at this time, as Don’s wishes were to have his body donated to the UND School Deeded Body Program, Grand Forks.

Don was born April 26, 1936 in Calgary, Alberta, the son of Allister and Ethel (Hollar) Massie. He attended schools at Red Deer Lake, Midnapore and Western Canada School.

He was employed in the cement business, working for Tru-Mix Concrete and Revelstoke Concrete and later managed a store in Lethbridge. He was married to Ellen Wood of Calgary. In later years he was employed by Mel’s Seismic of Calgary. During the early 1980’s, Don immigrated to the United States. In December 1980, Don married Barbara (Pfefferkorn) Huhncke of Steele. In 1981, he was part owner of Dakota Auger & Mfg. in Dickinson. Due to slow down in the oil business, Don found employment with Custom Contractors, Double D Supply, and Clarence Farber.

In 1987, Don purchased and operated his own truck until 1993, at which time he was forced to sell due to health problems. From 1994 to 2000, he was employed by TMI Systems as part of their maintenance team. During 2001 and 2002, he was employed by the Dickinson Parks & Recreation, and also worked for CARQUEST in Dickinson. Don retired in 2003, and he enjoyed playing cards with friends, traveling around the country in their fifth wheel.

Don is survived by his wife, Barbara; three daughters, Sharon (Jim) Gibson, Kim (Wayne) Adolphe, Calgary, and Diane Massie, Glasgow, Scotland; step-children, David (Caroline) Huhncke, Sterling, Connie (Joel) Hughes, Bismarck, and Mark Huhncke, Dickinson; six grandchildren, Ben (Katie) Gibson, Kent (Katee) Gibson, Zachary and Taylor Adolphe, Calgary, Jack and Samuel Burns, Glasgow, Scotland; two step-grandchildren, Tyler (Brandi) Everding, Bismarck, and Jason Everding, San Antonio, Texas; one step-great-granddaughter, Kailey Everding, Bismarck; three brothers, Peter Massie, Red Deer, Alberta, Scott (Eileen) Massie, Didsbury, Alberta, and Ken (Sandra) Massie, Blind Bay, B.C.; plus many nieces and nephews in Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law, Florence Massie.

Memorials are preferred in memory of Don to the Cowboy Hall of Fame, Medora.
