Donald E. Schmidt, 70, Dickinson, ND died Friday, December 5, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital & Health Center, Dickinson. Donald’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, December 9, 2008 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Todd Kreitinger as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery, Dickinson with military honors provided by the Veterans Drill Team. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m., with Deacon Jerry Volk presiding.

Donald was born May 3, 1938 at Richardton, the son of Joseph and Valeria (Phillips) Schmidt. He was raised and educated in Richardton through the younger years and then attended and graduated from Model High in Dickinson.

Don worked at the Dickinson Locker Plant and also doing house moving with Rueben Will. Don joined the United States Army on July 16, 1959 and served honorably until his discharge on July 14, 1961.

Don married Bernice Hondl in 1963 in Dickinson. He worked as a meat cutter at Fairway Foods and Bill’s Red Owl, prior to owning and operating his own locker plant for a period of time. Don married Carol Kuntz on August 16, 1996 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He retired in 2003.

Don belonged to the Knights of Columbus, he enjoyed cooking, making his own sausage and coffee time with the guys. He greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his family and grandkids.

Don is survived by his wife, Carol; two sons, Rick (special friend, Janille Olson) Schmidt, Dickinson, and Dean Schmidt, Dickinson; three grandchildren, Jesse Thompson, Josh Thompson and Remington Schmidt; and three sisters, Arlene (Gene) Hondl, Dickinson, Debbie (Kenny) Hauck, Beach, and Renee (Richard) Vetch, Pick City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Bernice; one daughter, Laurie Kruger; his parents, two brothers, Robert and Harvey; and two sisters, Denise Schneider and Delphine Vranna.
