Dorothy Guy Smith, 92, formerly of Kenosha, Wis., and most recently of Dickinson, N.D., passed away on Monday, December 31, 2018, at St. Alexius Hospital in Dickinson with her loving daughter by her side. Born in Terre Haute, Ind., on December 30, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Bonnie (Norris) Guy. In 1935, her parents moved their family to Kenosha, where Dorothy attended local schools. She married Howard H. Smith in Kenosha in 1946; they later divorced. In addition to raising her family, Dorothy worked for 30 years as a clerk in the maternity ward at St. Catherine’s Medical Center, retiring in 1991. She also volunteered for 45 years as an election day poll worker, including serving as Chief Election Inspector.
A spunky, well-dressed lady with a quick wit, “Dot” was an avid gardener, an expert antique collector, and an excellent pie maker. She enjoyed time spent with friends and family golfing, bowling, shopping, playing cards, and completing jigsaw puzzles. As a devoted and compassionate matriarch, Dorothy always put her family first. Her consistent, loving presence represented the epitome of a strong, independent female role model, and she leaves this as a legacy for her family to continue to emulate.
Survivors include her five children, David (Katie) of Chetek, Wis., Patrick (Marilyn) of Somers, Wis., Judith (Daniel) Koroscik of Cincinnati, Ohio, Donna Bergland of Raleigh, N.C., and Jennifer (Michael) Nance of Dickinson, N.D.; seven grandchildren (Daniel, Rebecca, Heather, Jessica, Rachel, Kaylee, and Brandon); and twelve great-grandchildren (Ryan, Jackson, Alexander, Ella, Madelynn, Nolan, Theodore, Charlotte, Logan, Alena, Mia, and Grey) plus one on the way. She was preceded in death by her brother, Charles, Jr.
Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff at Hilltop Home Of Comfort in Killdeer, N.D., and St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Dickinson, N.D., for the kind and compassionate care they provided her in the last years of her life. A future service to commemorate Dorothy’s life is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Lung Association would be appreciated by the family.
