Dorothy Nelson was born April 29, 1922, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Wheeler) Nelson on the family farm at Woodworth. She was the second youngest of seven children. She was educated through Woodworth Public School. Dorothy married Arthur Ulrich on December 9, 1939 at New Home, near Woodworth. She helped her husband measure crop land their first year of marriage. They lived and farmed in the Woodworth and Pingree areas for nine years before moving to Jamestown in 1950. Dorothy was a stay at home mom for six years taking care of their two children.
In 1956, they purchased the Coast to Coast store in Edgeley, which they owned and operated for two years. They moved to Dickinson in 1958, where they opened a Coast to Coast store in partnership with Art’s brother Edward and his wife Dorothy. They sold their interest in the store in 1971. After selling the store, they managed the Coast to Coast store in Minot for two years, managed the Red Trail Campground in Medora for one season, worked maintenance at St. John’s Lutheran Church, and she worked at Woolworth’s for seven years.
She enjoyed playing cards (especially pinochle), dancing, bowling, and camping. Some of the best days of her life were wintering at Havasu Springs Resort near Parker, Ariz. She always hated snow and loved the desert! She was so proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and always enjoyed their visits. She said one of the highlights of her life was naming the Paragon Bowl in Dickinson in a contest for which she won one year of free bowling. According to her though, she never quite mastered the sport. She moved to Evergreen in April 2015 and enjoyed her many friends, the staff and her time there.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Robert (Rae) Ulrich, North Ridgeville, Ohio, and Shirley (Bill) Andrus, Dickinson; five grandchildren, Kaele (Kevin) Wiberg, Springville, Utah, Amory (Kim) Ulrich, North Ridgeville, Kami (Kirk) Thompson, Denver, Colo., Kristi (Mark) Jerome, Pierre, S.D., and Kelly (Mike) Beyer, Fargo; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley, Holli and Kiana Wiberg, Knekia (Hunter) Parris, Richard and Colton Ulrich, Jaden, Jace, Hallie and Hanna Jerome, Kennedie, Emmerie and Kade Beyer, and Blake and Macy Thompson; and great-great-grandchildren, Roslyn, Liam and Grayson Parris.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur on May 15, 2005; her parents; siblings, Martha Gust, Gladys Graves, Sherman Nelson, Rosella Bohl, Alice Williams, and Wally Nelson; and grandson, Daymon Ulrich.
