Duane Anthony Schiwal, 65, of Belfield, North Dakota, passed away on February 25, 2026, in Bismarck, North Dakota. There will be a Rosary and Celebration of Life Service for Duane at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 2, 2026 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
Duane was born on January 22, 1961, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Bill and Polly (Schuld) Schiwal. He graduated from Trinity Catholic School in 1979. He grew up in western North Dakota and built a life rooted in hard work, family, and the outdoors.
On August 21, 1981, Duane married the love of his life, Lela Armbrust. Together they shared over four decades of marriage and raised two children, whom he was incredibly proud of.
Duane spent many years working as a pipeline welder before becoming a well operator. At the time of his passing, he was employed by Dickinson State University, where he continued his strong work ethic and dedication.
In his younger years, Duane enjoyed hunting and fishing, embracing the outdoors whenever he could. In later years, he found joy in playing Words With Friends, always ready for a good challenge and friendly competition.
Above all else, Duane was most proud of his family. He is survived by his wife, Lela; his son, Brandon Schiwal (Emily); his daughter, Tatum Schiwal Jones (Chris); four grandchildren; two bonus grandchildren; three bonus great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; his siblings: Carol Summerville (Scott), Tom Schiwal (Melody), Susie Jacobsen (Rex), Jerry Schiwal, Manette Obrigewitch (Jessie), Russell Schiwal (Elizabeth), Christine Wieneke (Todd), and Paula Mongold (Rod); his aunt, Phyllis (Ernie) Baranko; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Polly; his brother, Jim; and three siblings who passed away in infancy.
Duane will be remembered for his dedication to his family, his hardworking spirit, and the quiet pride he carried for his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
