Edward Ziman, 89, Dickinson, formerly of Dodge, died Saturday, October 18, 2014 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Deacon Ed’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m., Saturday, October 25, 2014 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Halliday, with Most Reverend David D. Kagan, Bishop of Bismarck as the celebrant, and assisted by Deacon Al Schwindt. Entombment will take place at the Dickinson Mausoleum at 12:30 p.m., Saturday. Visitation will be on Friday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, with a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., with Deacon Al Schwindt presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Edward was born at Chicago, Ill., on October 10, 1925, the son of John and Mary (Janolek) Ziman. Ed attended grade school and high school in Oak Lawn, Ill. He went on to attend St. Procopius Seminary in Chicago. While on retreat to Dodge, he met Mary Erker. They were married May 3, 1949, at Dodge. To this union, four children were born, Mary Ann, Kenneth, Keith, and Kevin.
Following their marriage, Ed taught school in Dodge and served as the Mayor for many years. He kept the books for the Dodge school, and also the Dodge and Killdeer parishes. In July 1958 he became Postmaster in Dodge and served there until his retirement in 1993. Ed and Mary crop shared land owned by them. They used their share of the crop to run a small ranching operation along the Spring Creek behind their home in Dodge. Ed remodeled their home and post office building that they owned. He renovated and rented property in Dodge, Dickinson and Mandan. He was an avid stamp and coin collector. After his retirement from the post office, he went through the Deaconate Program and became an ordained Deacon. Ed served as Deacon for the Halliday and Killdeer parishes.
Ed is survived by two children, Mary Ann (Clayton) Grossman, and Kevin (Cynthia M.) Ziman; daughter-in-law, Cindy K. Ziman; nine grandchildren, Dan (Beth) Ziman, Derek (Heather) Ziman, Joshua Ziman, Jordan Ziman, Jade (Loni) Ziman, Patrick (Marcy) Kuntz, Heather (Wade) Klein, Kristen (Shannon) Wanner, and Bridget (Chris) Lewis; 15 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary on September 2, 2001; and two sons, Kenneth, and Keith.
