Edwin A. Ficek passed away on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at the age of 74 after a short, hard-fought battle against cancer at MedCenter One in Bismarck surrounded by his loving family. Edwin’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 2 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2010 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Jeff Zwack as the celebrant and Fr. Josh Ehli con-celebrating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Dickinson. Visitation will be on Sunday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Monday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. There will be a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m., Sunday at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Jerry Volk and Deacon Ron Wolberg presiding.
Ed was born Aug. 29, 1935 in Manning, the son of Frank and Anna (Bren) Ficek. On October 27, 1955 he married the love of his life Mary Ann Frenzel and they were blessed with five children.
Ed worked as a Registered Land Surveyor until he retired in 1998 from Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson. He enjoyed spending time with his family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His hobbies included bowling, golfing, fishing and spending time at the cabin. He loved to be outdoors and had a special interest in keeping the birdfeeders full in his yard.
Blessed to have shared in his life is his wife of 54 years Mary Ann; five children, Greg (Lonnie) Ficek, Dickinson, Norene (Tim) Kessel, Dickinson, Richard “Dick” (Julie) Ficek, Mandan, Jeanne Kostelnak, Dickinson and Kirstie (Mike) Wieland, Mandan. He is also survived by five grandsons, Sheldon Wolf, Kristian Kostelnak, Casey and Connor Wieland, and Easton Ficek; three granddaughters, Teryl (Mitch) Armstrong, Tanya (Mike) Peluso and Kylie Wieland; four great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Josie, and Brooks Edwin Armstrong and Gianna Peluso; and two sisters Mildred Kadrmas, Yakima, Wash., and Blanche Dvorak, Albany, Ore. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Ken Kostelnak; his brothers, Vincent and Anton “Tony”; and his sisters, Ann Barta, Mary Kadrmas, Lillian Crothers and Emma Kadrmas.
