Edwin Thomas Ficek, 86, Fargo, formerly of Dickinson, died on Wednesday, June 12, 2024 at his home. Edwin’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Robert Shea as celebrant. Interment will follow at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 Honor Guard. Visitation will be at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson on Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a Rosary & Vigil at 7 P.M., with Deacon Bob Zent presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass on Tuesday at the church.
Edwin T. Ficek was born October 21, 1937 on the family homestead near New Hradec, the son of James and Anna (Kostelecky) Ficek. When he was a year old the family moved to rural Belfield and at the age of seven, they relocated to Dickinson. He had attended several grade schools in Dickinson, graduated from Dickinson High School, and attended Dickinson State Teachers College for a year.
Edwin served honorably in the United States Army from April 16, 1958, until March 21, 1961. He was united in marriage to Judith Frenzel on June 14, 1965 in Dickinson. He worked at various jobs such as Dickinson Ready Mix, Dinsdales Interstate Texaco, Farmers Union, Steffes and Son Manufacturing, and General Steel & Supply until his retirement. In December 2018, he and Judy moved to Fargo.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Ed loved to fish, camp, attend rodeos, and travel to see family.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Judith; children, Bryan Ficek, Fargo, Ken Ficek, Oklahoma City, OK, and Peggy (friend, Roger Smith) Collins, Barrett, MN; grandchildren, David (Brooke) Collins, Minot, Kendra (fiancé, Drake Ofsthun) Casselton, and Jacob (friend, Taylor Farris) Ficek, OK; great-grandchildren, Case and Colt Collins; sister, Aggie Ehli, Dumas, TX; and his Frenzel in-laws, Vernon Howser, Tacoma, WA, Myron and Gayle Kadrmas, Dickinson, Deb Stockert, Dickinson, Linda Keller, Dickinson, Donald and Lonnie Frenzel, Dickinson, David and Donna Frenzel, New Hradec, Sandy Frenzel, New Hradec, Stew and Judy Stenberg, Dickinson, Cliff and Darlene York, Idaho, and Izzy and Ellen Mastel, Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his in-laws, Ralph and Tillie Frenzel; brothers, Robert (Dorothy) Ficek, and Laudie (Marge) Ficek; sisters, Lilian (Joe) Hutzenbiler, Dorothy (Clarence) Dorval, and Eleanor (Walter) Richards; brothers-in-law, Robert Ehli, James Frenzel, Ralph Frenzel, Dennis Frenzel, Valery Stockert, and Gene Keller; sister-in-law, Jane Howser; and several nieces and nephews.
