Erma Sayler was born June 20, 1935 to Christ and Katie (Verworn) Sayler, on the family farm in Grant County. Erma attended country school until the eighth grade. She moved with her family into Hebron and while working for various cafés, eventually she met her future husband, Harold “Barney” Mayer. Harold and Erma were married on August 11, 1957. Erma spent many years babysitting youngsters in the Hebron area.

In 1981, Erma started working at Marion Manor Healthcare, a job she enjoyed. In 2017, Erma moved to Dickinson and resided at Heritage Hills. Although leaving Hebron after so many years was difficult, Erma enjoyed the activities Heritage Hills provided, especially Bingo and the potlucks.

Erma was a lifelong crafter, making many quilts, skirts, softcover books and crocheted dishrags and scrubbies, a love that she enjoyed until her death. Erma also loved flowers and looked forward to Spring when her peonies, lilies and clematis would bloom and when she could plant her flower garden.

Erma is survived by her children, Brenda (Rod) Knodel, Newman Lake, Wash., Glenn (JoAnn) Mayer, Colorado Springs, Colo., Bonnie (Dennis) Streitz, South Heart, and Steven (Tammy) Mayer, Bismarck; grandchildren, Aaron and Andrew Mayer, Nathan (Rachael) Knodel, Katie (Jerome) Casinger, Kylen, Preston, and Abigail Mayer, and Jake Streitz; step-grandchildren, Mallorie and Sam Henke; great-grandchildren, Danny Casinger, Isabel, Jackson, and Beckette Knodel; sisters, Violet Fischer, Rose Huck, and Linda Cowell; numerous nieces and nephews; and friend, Belinda “Bella” Schlichting.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; son, Kermit; her parents; brothers, Reinhard, Wilbert, Walter, Edgar, Ervin, Roy and Kenneth; sisters, Elsie Ulmer, Florence Sayler, Lorraine Riedlinger, and Eleanor Opp; infant brothers, Reuben, Raymond and Benjamin; and several nieces and nephews.
