Eugene “Gene” Fitterer, 77, New England, died Sunday, January 4, 2015 at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Dickinson. Gene’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New England, with Fr. John Paul Gardner as the celebrant, and Fr. Biju Chitteth as con-celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, with military honors provided by the New England American Legion Anton Ulijohn Post #66. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, and will continue at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. There will be on Tuesday a St. Pius Verein Rosary at 7 p.m., followed by a vigil with Deacon Victor Dvorak presiding at Ladbury Funeral Service.

Eugene Fitterer was born May 24, 1937 in New England, the son of Aloysius and Mary (Boespflug) Fitterer. He was raised and educated in New England, graduating with the Class of 1955 from New England St. Mary’s High School. He entered the United States Army and served honorably from 1956 through 1958, stationed in Korea. He returned to North Dakota and attended the North Dakota State School of Science in Wahpeton, receiving a Civil Engineering Technician certificate.

Gene married Rose Kuntz on October 12, 1963 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. He and Rose made their home in New England and he went to work for the Soil Conservation Service for 34 years, working in Mott, New England and Dickinson. Following his retirement he went to work as a inspector for road projects for the next 15 years, first with Kadrmas, Lee & Jackson, and then with Dunn County.

He belonged to the KC Council 1515, St. Pius Verein, St. Anthony Club, and also the National Association for Federal Employees. He enjoyed watching and going to all kinds of sporting events, occasional trips to the casino, and he was an avid follower of the stock markets. His greatest joys came from spending time with family, seeing and attending events of grandkids, playing cards with family, and shooting pool.

Gene is survived by his wife, Rose; their three children, Kim (Dennis) Candrian, Beulah, Shawn (Cami Jo) Fitterer, Dickinson, and Tammy (James) Kramer, Dickinson; six grandchildren, Kayden and Connor Candrian, Abigail and Benson Kramer, and Cole and Cade Fitterer; four sisters, Eleanor Fitterer, Dickinson, Lorraine (Tony) Braun, Dickinson, MaryAnn (Louie) Bosch, Roswell, New Mexico, and Marge Burwick, Dickinson; and four sisters-in-law, Irene Fitterer, Bismarck, Lorraine (René) Reinhardt, Oregon, Ruth Fitterer, New England, and Wilma Fitterer, Dickinson. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Clarence, Peter, Wilfred, and Michael.
