Eugene Hondl, 86, Dickinson, died Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at his home. Gene’s Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 28, 2019 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church with Msgr. Patrick Schumacher as celebrant. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. CT, Thursday, August 29, 2019 at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan with Deacon Jerry Volk presiding. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service with Deacon Bob Stockert presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Eugene Joseph Hondl was born August 17, 1933 in Dickinson, son of Joseph and Emma (Novotny) Hondl. He was raised and educated in the Dickinson area, having attended Model High School. Gene served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from August 5, 1954 to July 20, 1956.

Eugene was united in marriage to Arlene Schmidt on May 28, 1960 at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, south of Richardton. Together they made their home in Dickinson where Gene had a 50 plus year career as a mechanic with Sax Motors. This was a job he truly loved and enjoyed.

He belonged to the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed collecting arrowheads and coins, loved gardening and being outside, but especially enjoyed spending time with his grandkids. He had a soft spot for his adopted dogs.

Gene is survived by his wife Arlene; three children, Kevin (Mary Kay) Hondl, Dickinson, Craig (Brandi) Hondl, Dickinson and Tanya (Patrick) Olheiser, Bismarck; six grandchildren, Cory Hondl, Kelli (Timothy) Graham, Alex Ziman, Bria Kilwein, Kyana Olheiser and Traven Olheiser; two great-grandchildren, Colton and Lyla Ziman; and his sisters, Leona Jilek and Jane Anton, Dickinson.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Ludwig; sister, Bernice Schmidt; and in-laws, Laudie Jilek and Donald Schmidt.
