Fred Heidecker was born on February 16, 1927 on the family farm near Werner, the son of Bill P. and Lena (Meissner) Heidecker. He was raised and educated in the Halliday area where he attended the Zeiner District 2 and Big Flat School.

He served honorably in the United States Army from June 20, 1945 until his honorably discharge on November 23, 1946, having spent some of the time in Germany. He loved spending time fishing on Lake Sakakawea where he and Agnes owned a cabin at Mossett Bay. In 2004 they retired from farming and moved to Dickinson. To pass time he enjoyed woodworking making a bird house and bird feeder for each of his kids and planting huge gardens. He also loved spending time with his family.
