Gary was born September 4, 1944 in Bowman, the son of George and Kathryn (Davis) Odegaard. He was raised and educated in Scranton, having graduated from Scranton High School in 1962.
He attended UND in Grand Forks until enlisting in the U.S. Army on August 12, 1965. He served honorably until August 11, 1967. He was awarded the Bronze Star W/V Device. Following his discharge he was united in marriage to Candace Johnson, a young lady that he had met at a get acquainted dance at UND. This marriage took place at Trinity Lutheran in Bismarck on August 19, 1967. To this union three children, Michael, Tim and Beth were born.
He returned to UND to complete a degree in Business Administration. Gary went to work for Hormel in Freemont, Neb. and then transferred to Renton, Wash. He went on to work for ACE Tanks in Seattle and after 13 years the family moved to Dickinson in the early 1980’s. While in Dickinson, he worked in sales, most recently with and retiring from Roughrider Homes and RV’s.
Gary especially enjoyed spending time with the grandchildren, time at the family farm North of Hettinger, gardening, and hunting pheasant. He loved to fix things and tinker in the garage. He was his grandchildren’s #1 fan, never missing a game or dance recital.
He took great pride in the Stark County Veterans Memorial.
