He grew up on the family farm 15 miles southwest of New England along with his siblings Donna, Debra and James and he lived there most of his life. He had attended Carroll School near the farm for eight years and then attended high school in New England, having graduated in 1963. While in high school he played football and was active in FFA. They raised their children, Sarah, William, and Steven on this farm.

He loved fishing and hunting and was on a bowling league for several years. In later years, he found he had a talent for woodworking.
