George Gordon “Homer” Bender, Jr., 84, New England, died Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the VA Hospital, Fargo. George’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Rev. TJ Shockley officiating. Interment will follow at the New England Cemetery, New England. Military honors will be provided by the New England American Legion Anton Ulijohn Post 66 at the cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service.

He was born to George and Clara (Hartman) Bender in New England on June 12, 1929. He attended New England Public School and graduated in 1949.

He enlisted in the Army on February 24, 1951, proudly served his country with active duty during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged from the Army on January 26, 1953 at the rank of Sargent. He worked construction until retiring in 1991. He was raised and lived in New England. “Homer” spent his final few years residing at St. Luke’s Nursing Home in Dickinson.

Proceeding him in death were his parents George and Clara Bender; four brothers, Ernest “Barney” Bender, Floyd “Fuzz” Bender, Clayton “Fat” Bender, and Walter “Walt” Bender.

He is survived by his brother, Charles C. (Ida Zeh) Bender, Elgin; sister-in-law, Adeline (Brandner) Bender, New England; four nephews Clyde (Suzanne) Bender of New England, Bruce (Judy) Bender of New England, Perry (Annette) Bender of Minot, and Clinton (Sandy) Bender of Bismarck.
