Georgia Schmaltz, 83, Dickinson, died Sunday, February 6, 2011 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Georgia’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m., Thursday, February 10, 2011 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. There will be rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., Wednesday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Deacon Ralph Stockert presiding.
Georgia Karsky was born September 14, 1927 on the family farm in Dunn County, near New Hradec. She was the daughter of Anton J. and Anna (Kudrna) Karsky.
Georgia married Taft Kostelecky on October 13, 1947 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, New Hradec, and made their home on a farm nearby, where they had their daughter Rosanne. After Taft’s death on March 14, 1951, she moved to Dickinson. On July 17, 1954, Georgia married Martin Schmaltz at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson. Together they had seven children. In addition to running a happy and loving home she had a variety of jobs from Wecker Drug to Woolworth’s. Before retirement she spent several years working with the hot lunch program at Berg Elementary. She was an amazing seamstress and cook. Her family was happiest eating her delicious Czech and German meals, which included cheese buttons and kolaches. Georgia’s hobbies were crocheting, gardening, camping and watching the Minnesota Twins. She was a member of Catholic Daughters, the Alter Societys, St. Joseph Ladies’ Auxiliary, and was an active member of St. Joseph Parish.
Georgia leaves behind her seven children, Rosanne Kostelecky (Dominick Weisgerber), Phoenix, Ariz., Diane (Ron) Knaup, Minot, Deborah (Greg) Luptak, Bismarck, Thomas Schmaltz, Eagan, Minn. Janel (Alvin) Kuntz, Dickinson, Jacqueline (Mark) Houn, Grand Rapids, Mich., Lisa (Colin) Guenther, Bismarck. She also leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Lance, Krista, Marshall, Mendy, James, Travis, Troy, Joshua, Aaron, Madeline, and Matthew; five great grandchildren, Amalea, Emma, Taylor, Liam, and Lola. She will also be missed by her siblings, Gertrude Buresh, Bertha Bren, Mary Kolling, Clara (Rueben) Munsch, all of Dickinson, Anthony (Arlene) Karsky, Jamestown, and Dennis (Arlene) Karsky, Oaklawn, Ill. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Taft and Martin (January 3, 2008), her son, DuWayne, her parents, Anton and Anna Karsky, her sister, Martha Karsky, and three brothers-in-law, Anton Buresh, Joe Kolling and Albert Bren.
Georgia’s determination, hard work, and sense of humor were truly gifts. We will sincerely miss her.
