Gladys Ann Hlebechuk, 92, Dickinson, died on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Gladys’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Friday, March 15, 2024 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson with Msgr. Thomas Richter as celebrant. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. with Deacon Leonard Krebs presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass at the church.
Gladys Ann Kubas the daughter of Alois “Louis” and Anna (Ridl) Kubas was born on her parent’s farm north of South Heart in Stark County on November 28, 1931. She was raised on the farm and attended country school. She graduated from Model High School in 1949 in Dickinson. Following high school she was employed by Osborn Photography Studio. She then also worked as a telephone operator for Northwestern Bell and worked 22 years part-time for the Gold Seal Company in Medora. She also ran for county office in Medora, Billings County, North Dakota for register of deeds, which also included the duties of clerk of court.
Gladys married Lawrence Hlebechuk on May 4, 1953 at St. Josaphat’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, Gorham. They purchased property located at Fairfield where they raised seven children on this ranch. They also milked cows, raised beef cattle, horses, mules, pigs, chickens, turkeys, along with growing hay, wheat, and oats. Lawrence and Gladys moved off the ranch in 1990, moving south of Belfield for a brief time. They then moved north of South Heart where they resided.
She was a member of Queen of Peace and was devoted to praying the rosary daily. Gladys enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading, baking, and spending time with her family. She was an excellent cook. Her crocheted doilies adorned the homes of each of her daughters and daughters-in-law. She was proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Gladys is survived by her children, Tom (Debra) Hlebechuk, Fairfield, Noreen (Von) Johnson, Belfield, Randy (Peggy) Hlebechuk, Rhame, Larry (Alison) Hlebechuk, Dickinson, Levi Hlebechuk, Dickinson, and Sara (Bob) Brown, Baker, MT; 16 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence, January 2, 2021; her son, Gary Hlebechuk; her parents; siblings, Francis (Adolf) Fisher, Emma (Adolf) Ficek, Lillian (Frank) Pavlish, Jenny (Tony) Wolf, Joseph (Barbara) Kubas, and Sophia Kubas; and sister-in-law, Eleanor (Hubert) Whipf.
