Gladys Ming was born on April 21, 1921 in Hume Township of Slope County, the daughter of William and Laura (Stafford) Ming. She had twin brothers, Ray and Fay. She grew up on the family farm southwest of New England. She attended the Reid School in rural Slope County. Gladys loved being outside and helping with jobs around the farm, especially with the animals. She cared for children and their families in the surrounding area.
Gladys met William Gussey when he worked on a threshing crew that came to her parent’s farm. Gladys and William were married on February 18, 1943 at the Congregational Church parsonage in New England. They raised their four children, Donna, Gary, James and Debra on their farm 15 miles southwest of New England.
She was a great cook and baker…there were always cookies ready whenever anyone stopped by. Gladys loved getting together with neighbors to visit or play cards (she often talked about how much she missed those times), she enjoyed being out with the animals, milking cows, taking care of calves, raising, chickens, turkeys and ducks and always a big garden.
She always loved to visit with people to her last days. Always a smile and loved to have family around. Gladys was independent and made daily trips to the desk at Evergreen for a piece of chocolate. She also enjoyed reading and word puzzles.
Gladys was a lifelong member of the Pierce Congregational, United Church of Christ of rural Scranton.
Her husband, William, passed away in 1975 and a few years later she moved from the farm to New England where she lived until 2017 when she moved to Evergreen in Dickinson.
