Glenn W. Nickel, 74, Dickinson, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, October 2, 2009 following a courageous battle with cancer and in the care of Heartland Hospice at his home. Glenn’s funeral service will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Steven Tangen and Rev. Lisa Lewton officiating. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan on Wednesday. Military honors will take place following the service on Tuesday and will be provided by the Dickinson Honors Team. Visitation will be from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., Tuesday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., Monday at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Glenn Wayne Nickel was born April 4, 1935 at Judson, the son of Carl and Ellen (Merting) Nickel. He was raised and educated in the Judson area and graduated from New Salem High School in 1954. Glenn joined the United States Army and Army Reserves where he served honorably with them from March 22, 1954 to November 30, 1962.
Glenn married Rose Marie Nodland on December 28, 1957 in Dunn Center. They lived in Bismarck prior to moving to Dickinson in 1963. He worked as a salesmen throughout his life, first at Cloverdale in Mandan, Western Dairies, Johnston’s Distributing, KDIX Radio, Sax Motors and Newby’s Ace Hardware all in Dickinson. During this time he also served as a distributer of Watkins Products.
Glenn was proud to have belonged to many community and church organizations. Organizations such as: the Dickinson Jaycees (State Editor), Lions Club, Charter member of Kiwanis, Cub Master (Boy Scouts), Toastmasters, the Amateur Radio Club and the Stark County Historical Society. As a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, he served as an assisting minister, usher, and chairmen of the pledge card fund drive.
Glenn enjoyed in his free time being a Ham Radio Operator, going hunting and fishing, gardening, stamp and coin collecting, and most of all the annual family camping trips to the different national parks.
Glenn is survived by his wife, Rose; their three children, Greg Nickel, Dickinson, Cheryl (Tim) Lantz, Dickinson, and Jeff (Tina) Nickel, Exton, Pa.; four grandchildren, Brittany, Christina and Rachel Lantz, and Madison Nickel; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Florence (Gordon) Kucera, Bismarck, Grace Zastoupil, Fargo, George (Kayleen) Nodland, Dickinson and Herbert Tschaekofske, Bismarck; and his long time friends, Don and Vanita Mosher, Appleton, Wis. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Kristopher Charles; his parents; brothers, Wilbur and Donald; and his in laws, Louise and Gonvold Nodland. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to the North Dakota Cancer Society or to the Badlands Ministries Bible Camp in Medora.
