Harriet Whelan, 85, Dickinson, died Saturday, August 2, 2014 at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Harriet’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at the United Methodist Church, Dickinson, with Rev. Dick Rinearson officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Medora Cemetery, Medora. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.

Harriet Horsager was born June 21, 1929 at Berlin, N.D., the daughter of John and Marie (Fitzgerald) Horsager. She was raised and educated in the Berlin and Edgeley area. Harriet went on to earn her teaching degree. She taught for 26 years, starting out in rural schools, and then Fullerton, Bowman and Dickinson.

Harriet was united in marriage to Darwin “Buzz” Whelan on August 12, 1951, at the United Methodist Church, Berlin. They lived in Bowman for 14 years prior to moving to Dickinson. Following their retirements they enjoyed wintering in Mesa, Ariz.

She belonged to SARTA (retired teachers), the church circle, did volunteer work at Social Services Social Club helping with art work, and also at the correctional center. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, computer time, and traveling.

Harriet is survived by three children, Stacy (John) Bang, Killdeer, Casey (Mary) Whelan, Maple Grove, Minn., and Cheri (Errol) Schoenfish, Fargo; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three siblings, Helen Dewald, Moorhead, Minn., Bryan (Kathy) Horsager, Richland, Wash., and Harley (Diane) Horsager, Lakeville, Minn.; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Horsager, White Bear Lake, Minn., and Audrey Horsager, Edgeley; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Buzz on September 19, 2010; her parents; step-mother, Adele Horsager; infant sister, Joey; three siblings, Miles Horsager, Blaine Horsager, and Hazel Drenth; and brothers-in-law, Elmer Dewald and Henry Drenth.
