Harvey I. Hewson, 85, rural New England, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 at home with family at his side. Harvey’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2016 at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, New England, with Rev. Bruce Peterson and Rev. Mark Nygard officiating. Interment will follow at the Peaceful Valley Cemetery, Rural New England. Military honors will be provided by the New England American Legion Anton Ulijohn Post 66. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, and will continue on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the church. There will be a prayer service at 7 p.m., Tuesday at Ladbury Funeral Service.
Harvey Ira Hewson was born December 31, 1930, in rural Dickinson, the son of Earl and Daisy (Remington) Hewson. He attended grade school at Peaceful Valley Township Country School, and New England Public High School through the 10th grade. At that time he stayed home and helped his parents on their farm and ranch. Harvey joined the U.S. Army in 1951 and served honorably until his discharge in 1953. He had served during the Korean Conflict, where he received the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star, and the Army Occupation Medal (Japan).
Harvey returned to the states, he was united in marriage to Donna Mae Nielsen at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, New England, on June 14, 1955. They settled in rural Slope County, where they raised six children, along with growing grain, raising sheep and cattle until retirement.
He enjoyed collecting rocks and artifacts, especially arrowheads. He showed his rock and arrowhead collection at the Slope County Fair. He liked playing the guitar and singing, entertaining the grandchildren with his yodeling. He and Donna bowled for many years. He took pride in showing people what his children had accomplished. He also enjoyed traveling with Donna and visiting with relatives, friends and service buddies.
Harvey is survived by his wife, Donna Mae; six children, Odis (Edie Reis) Hewson, Buffalo, S.D., Metta (Brian) Sturn, Villard, Minn., Leon (Lynette Koller) Hewson, Amidon, Troy (Elaine Loeschke) Hewson, Newell, S.D., Jeff (Cheryl Geerts) Hewson, New England, and Aaron (Lori Krebs) Hewson, Dickinson; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dewey (Sadie) Hewson, Alamo; Beverly (Dave) Medalen, Willow City; Sherryl (Rod) Ladson, Rosebud, Mont., and Vivian (Dave) Dinius, New England; sisters-in-law, Fern, Shirley and Maggie; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roger, Roy and Lee; sisters, Earlene (Edwin) Schuhrke and Rita (Donnie) Ehrmantrout; and an infant daughter.
