Hazel M. Lutz, 81, Dickinson died Sunday following a six week battle with pneumonia on August 10, 2008 at Med Center One, Bismarck. Hazel was grateful to have her children and their families and her brothers and sisters visiting and reminiscing of old times, but the Lord saw that she was getting tired so He took her home to be with Him. Hazel’s daughter Sandi and daughter-in-law Rita were by her side for her last hours before God took her home. Hazel’s funeral service will be at 10 a.m., Friday, August 15, 2008 at St. John Evan. Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Rev. Lisa Lewton officiating. Inurnment will take place the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Hazel M. Johnson was delivered by Dr. Hill on June 13, 1927 on the family farm southwest of Regent, the daughter of Wayne and Della (Humdmark) Johnson. Hazel graduated from Regent High School in 1945. She left the farm to look for a job in Dickinson and went to work at the Woolworths store that was located on Villard.

Hazel married Ralph P. Lutz on March 15, 1946 at Glendive, Mont.. Ralph and Hazel farmed southeast of New England until 1975, when they moved to Dickinson where they built their home they have lived in since. They became avid business people, having been in partnership in building of the Holiday Inn, Mr. Steak, and Bonanza. They also built State Street Apartments, North Hills Condos, and North Hills Mini Malls, along with owning North Hills Food and Gas, Inc. and Ralphy’s Restaurant. She was a member of the Tepee Butte Lutheran Church, rural Regent, Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church, New England, and St. John Lutheran Church, Dickinson. She was a member of the Eagle’s Club, Rebecca Lodge and the Birthday Club which she enjoyed meeting with her friends once a month at different eating places in Dickinson and even sometimes going to Four Bears.

Hazel is survived by her seven children, Sandra K. Strommen-Horner, Dickinson, Dennis (Rita) Lutz, New England, Durand Lutz, Dickinson, Scott (Lonnie) Lutz, Brentwood, Calif., Jeffery (Candice) Lutz, Dickinson, Bradley (Elmire) Lutz, Los Angles, Calif., and Gregery (Val Wright) Lutz, Dickinson; 22 grandchildren, Sheila (Erik) Vanthilt, Thornton, Colo., Rashelle (Jim) Hansen, Broadus, Mont., Shari (Troy) Wolf, New England, Janelle (Maj. Jonathan) Erickson, Bismarck, Christopher (Laurie) Strommen, Dickinson, Curtis (DeAnn) Strommen, Dickinson, Cordell Strommen, Bismarck, Dana (Dan) Glasser, Dickinson, Kelly (Joe) Buettner, Norfolk, Neb., Cheri (Scott) Holden, Dickinson, Jody (Chad) Buckingham, Rapid City, SD, Mike (Kari) Lutz, Dickinson, Dakota Myran, Dickinson, Kristine (Paola) Dava, Antioch, Calif., Kimberly Lutz, Kihei, Maui, Hawaii, Garrett Lutz, Bismarck, Quentin Lutz, Dickinson, Brandon Lutz, Los Angles, Kellen Lutz, Los Angles, Brittany Lutz, Los Angles, Tanner Lutz, Los Angles and Amber Lutz, Dickinson; 25 great-grandchildren and one due in October, Kayden Vanthilt, Brenna, Brooke and Madison Hansen, Nick, Autumn, Hunter and Logan Wolf, Chelsea, Jacob, Isaac and Wyatt Erickson, Hannah and Izabel Strommen, Damon and Dylan Glasser, McKenzie and Madison Buettner, Ashley Holden, Jordan, Kjerste and Regan Lutz, Kaitlyn and Brooklyn Myran and Ryder Fink; three step-grandchildren, Crystal (Shannon) Sickler, Dickinson, Cynthia (James) Chestnut, Dickinson, and Clayton (Brenda) LaPierre, Halliday; six step, great-grandchildren, Christopher and Emilie Sickler, Tate LaPierre, Shadd, Shawna and Shanyce Fredericks; two sisters, Fern Lawrence, Dickinson and Irene Olson, Polson, Mont.; four brothers, Duane (Alice) Johnson, Polson, Mont., Baird (Ruby) Johnson, Medical Lake, Wash., Gary Johnson, Phoenix, Ariz., and Gene Johnson, Medical Lake, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Irene (Clarence) Monke, Regent; two brothers-in-law, Alton Ivey, Mott, and Marvin (Stella) Lutz, Rapid City, SD. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph on January 1, 2005, her parents; one son-in-law, Ronald K. Strommen; three sisters, Florence Krank, Laura Ivey and infant, Edna Rose Johnson; one brother, Ralph Johnson; one sister-in-law, Sonia Johnson; and five brothers-in-law, Robert Lawrence, Frank Krank, Wally Olson, William Lutz and Albert Lutz.
