Herbert Duane Manz, 89, Killdeer, died on Monday, February 26, 2024 at CHI St. Alexius Dickinson.

Herbert Duane Manz was born on April 9, 1934 in Sheridan County, the son of Frank B. and Margaret (Rosenow) Manz. He was raised and lived on the family farm until 1956 when he was drafted into the United States Army. Herbert was honorably discharged in 1958. He had planned to stay in the Army, but due to his father’s illness he went home to work on the family farm.

In 1969 Herbert was admitted to St. Aloisius Hospital for a surgery, and it was at this time he met his future wife, Mary Lou, while she was working as a CNA. Herbert and Mary Lou were united in marriage on July 25, 1970 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey.  They have been married 53 years.

He ran a feed lot on the ranch until his retirement in 2008. Upon his retirement, Herbert sold the farm and moved to Killdeer to be with his wife. He kept busy with remodeling and repair projects and helping Mary Lou with gardening as well as food prep in the kitchen. Herbert used to say that he always wanted to pull his own weight when possible.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, doing mechanics, appliance repair, carpentry, making bird houses, feeding birds, playing chess and in his later years, playing Connect 4.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Mary Lou (Udelhofen) Manz, Killdeer; children, Nadeen (Manz) Jackowski, Portland, TN, and Michael A. Manz, Killdeer; one grandchild, Trevor Umpleby; sisters, Violet (Jack) Arden, Westhope, and Adeline Wynne, (Chuck) Edmonds, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Marian (Lester) Johnson.

Instead of a formal funeral, the plan is for cremation now and having a gathering of family and friends on June 15, 2024 at Perkins at 1100 E Interstate Ave, Bismarck, starting at 2 PM CT. Since diets can vary greatly, each person will have to buy his or her our own lunch.

I am keeping Herbert’s ashes until I die, then Nadeen and Michael will put us both in the same area.
