Hilary “Larry” “Hoppy” Hopfauf, Jr., 89, Dickinson, died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Hilary’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, September 8, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Fr. Keith Streifel as the celebrant. Entombment will follow at the Dickinson Mausoleum. Visitation on Sunday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with Deacon Dallas Carlson presiding.

Hilary was born January 27, 1925 at Dickinson to Hilary and Katherine (Dietz) Hopfauf. Hilary attended St. Joseph’s grade school and Dickinson High School. Hilary married Josephine Safratowich on June 24, 1946 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, Belfield. Hilary was a salesman for the Nash Finch Company in Dickinson and Bismarck. He was later employed by Fairway Foods of Fargo and then Hartz Foods of Thief River Falls, Minn. Hilary was a supervisor of stores with Fairway and Hartz Foods.

Hilary was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, Hilary and Josephine were presented with the “Family of the Month” award in May, 1990, as a result of their commitment to their church family. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #1137. Hilary was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Dickinson and served as an usher for 18 years. Hilary enjoyed many hobbies including woodworking, carving, swimming at the Dickinson Recreation Center, camping, fishing, and coffee with his many friends. He enjoyed joking, storytelling, and spending time with grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He survived by his loving wife, Josephine, Dickinson; three sons, Hilary (Jeanette), Glendive, Mont., Patrick (Sandee), Missoula Mont., and Thomas (Alesia), Dickinson; brother-in-law Mike Safratowich, Wadena, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Eleanore Safratowich, Butte, Mont; seven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, Paul (Amy) Hopfauf and their children Michael and Alex, Glendive, Mont., Pamela (Calvin) Dean and their children Christopher and Elizabeth, Dickinson, Drew Hopfauf, Hawaii, Dillan (Kendahl) Hopfauf and their children Kaelynn and Jordynn, Missoula, Mont., Carsen Hopfauf, Missoula, Mont., Joshua (Emily) Raden and their daughter Joselie, Dickinson, Jalynn (Casey) Feininger and their children Kadence, Kamryn, and Cayson, Watertown, S.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara (Ernest) Tooz, Esther (John) Gengler, Phyllis (Hubert) Whipf, Mary Safratowich, Laudie Safratowich; and one infant sister, Ottilia.

Hilary’s family is grateful for his wonderful caregivers at St. Benedict’s Health Center.
