Howard Freed, 90, Dickinson, died Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at his home. Howard’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, March 11, 2017 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Dickinson with Fr. Shannon Lucht as the celebrant. Interment will take place later this spring at St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Dickinson American Legion Post 3. Visitation will be on Friday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a rosary & vigil at 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson.
Howard A. Freed was born on March 14, 1926 to Amos and Ella (Stenerson) Freed. He was raised in Dickinson and attended local primary and secondary schools. After graduating from high school in 1944 he entered the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific for two years. Upon discharge, he attended North Dakota State University and graduated from St. Thomas University in St. Paul, Minn. in 1950 and from Marquette University Law School in Milwaukee, Wis. in 1953.
On June 14, 1952 Howard married Barbara Day in St. Paul, Minn. They returned to Dickinson where Howard was a practicing attorney for more than 38 years including four years as Stark County States Attorney. He also served 12 years as Stark County Senator in the North Dakota Senate Legislature. He was chairman of the Judiciary Committee for six years and President-Pro-Tem. of the Senate for two years. He was a member of the American College of Probate Counsel and the North Dakota State Bar Association. He was a partner in the law firm of Freed, Dynes, Reichert and Herauf.
Howard served on the Board of Regents for the University of Mary, Bismarck. He was also a member of the Elks, Rotary, VFW, Knights of Columbus and the St. Anthony Club.
Having been an Eagle Scout, Howard was active in Boy Scouts leadership work in the earlier years. He was a member of the Stark County Council on Aging and during his retirement years he was active in Elder Care and Tax Aide programs for the elderly. He enjoyed his grandchildren and traveled extensively with his wife Barbara.
Howard is survived by two sons; Robert (Yan), Grand Forks and Thomas, Gig Harbor, Wash.; two daughters, Mary, Dickinson, and Kathleen (Ron) Doerr, Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren, one sister, Helen Weber, Spearfish, SD; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Barbara; his parents, step-mother, Evelyn (Le Beau) Freed and three brothers, Kenneth, Larry and DuWayne.
